How a Blockbuster is promoted?

In this following assignment I will be discussing how the 2014 Summer Blockbuster “X-Men Days of Future Past” was advertised and how It was marketed through the mainstream.

The synopsis of the 7th film In the X-Men universe. The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants. It is based upon a famed comic book by Marvel Comics, which the X-Men characters are all based upon.

The cast that was in this film contained old favorites and new up and coming stars in this movie. Stars like Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), James McAvoy (Young Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Young Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Shadow Cat), Peter Dinklage (Boliver Trask), Ian McKellen (Older Magneto), and Patrick Steward (Older Charles Xavier). The film use of a variety of stars helps with the marketing of the film and brings fans who, loved the older X-Men films and the new stars and there respected movies or shows.

The director of the film was Bryan Singer. Who at this point directed three X-Men movies (All three were a critical and financial success in 2000, 2003 and 2011)

X-Men: Days of Future Past became the best-reviewed film in the X-Men film series. It was praised for its story, visual effects and action scenes, acting, and thematic elements. It is also the highest-grossing film in the series, having earned over $748 million worldwide. Empire Magazine say

"The best X-Men film since the second one, this sequel/prequel/reboot trashes the ’70s with élan. Some of the massive cast struggle to register (there’s only a brief Storm), but what’s here is all good. We want X-Men: Apocalypse, now.” Another review from the Telegraph says "The film squanders both of its casts, reeling from one fumbled set piece to the next. It seems to have been constructed in a stupor, and you watch in a daze of future past”.

In the trailers for X-Men Days of Future Past they show a lot of the story in the film. Can the heroes save the future and the audience, feel the threat of how big the film is and makes us even more Intrigued for what is going to happen.

The Internet played a big role for the promotion of Days of Future Past. With a website dedicated too the movie. It displayed a lot of history of the different mutants in the film and shows us the whole world that these characters inhabit. That helps the audience understand the world but also gives us a feeling of why we should feel for these characters.

The film was promoted through different means. Being that Days of Future Past is a comic book movie. No better place to promote the film is San Diego Comic Con. One of the biggest gatherings of fans in the Bay Area. There the cast of the film all join a panel and discuss the film and even do a Q&A with the fans.

The merchandise of the film all varied too promote too the fan base. From Lego sets to the film being promoted on Mountain Dew. Any part of our culture around Summer 2014 must have had X-Men related material on them.

When X-Men Days of Future Past premiered. Red carpets happened at eight different cities. New York, London, Beijing, Moscow, Singapore, Sao Paulo, Melbourne and Tokyo. Showing how big the film is and showing the global scale of it is well.

Finally the posters. The first posters released for the film showed the older actors of Ian Mckellen and Patrick Steward shown together with their respected stars, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Showing the many years of the X-Men universe and bringing together older stars and the new stars in this one film.
