Script

Script For Lynn
Hassan Ul-Haq

Hello. My name is Hassan Ul-Haq. Today I will be discussing a film that I adore so much that, I consider it to be on my top 5 favourite films of all time. That film being Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. This sequel from the highly successful “The New Hope” was released in 1980. It was directed by the talented George Lucas who not only is known for the Star Wars Franchise. But movies such as Indiana Jones, THX 1138 and American Graffiti. To name a few from Lucas’s résumé. It stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford (who at the time, was still filming for the popular adventure series “Indiana Jones”), Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew and Frank Oz. Thoughts were varied when it was first released with mixed reviews. But as time went on, the film was considered one of the greatest films of all time.

The movie is set 3 years after the events of A New Hope. The rebels now reside in the icy planet of Hoth. But there peace is ruined when the Empire is set to attack our protagonist. As the rebels flee Hoth. The heroic Luke Skywalker goes on a trip to find Yoda to train him, in the ways of the force. While Han Solo, Princess Leia and company are on the run from the Empire. But when Luke senses his friends are in trouble. He must make a choice: Stay and master the will of the force. Or… leave and save his friends. But a secret will be revealed to Luke that changes the face of the Star Wars universe and the rest of cinema history.

As the film begins we have the typical Star Wars scroll up that we have seen in the first film and in many more to come. The film starts with an Empire Fleet roaming the planet of Hoth. Sending down small, but very futuristic- Drones to the icy planet. From the get go, we know that something big is going to occur in this sequel. The drones make a very electronic sound, representing that futuristic feeling that the Star Wars universe is all about. Moving from that moment, we go from one of the drones that landed in Hoth to the camera moving on to our protagonist Luke Skywalker. Which shows that a lot is going on in Hoth and building up the conflict between the Rebels and the Empire on Hoth. When we see Luke on Hoth we instantly recognise our protagonist since we last saw him in A New Hope. Wearing attire that represented the planet they’re currently occupying in which is warm, comfy attire from head to toe. With a distinguishing hat and unique binoculars. Luke is also shown to be riding a Tauntaun. A fictional horse like creature that Luke rides in the Icy horizon. Shows the wider universe that these characters in Star Wars inhabit and shows something more organic rather then man made. Like when it roars, it gives out the opposite sound to what the drone gave which was an electronic sound. Instead the Tauntaun made a roar similar to of an animal like a horse. Majestically and beautifully.

In the final scene of Empire Strikes Back. After escaping Cloud City from the clutches of the Empire. Our protagonists re-group together as not only have they lost Han Solo who is currently in stasis. But, Luke discovering that Darth Vader is his father. However in this scene our heroes are not quitting so easily. The shot moves from the Rebel base to the very As the ewe inspiring Chewbacca and the charismatic Lando Calrissian are set to find Han Solo and return him back to the Rebel base. The editing in this scene skips too each hero. Showing each of there emotions and showing what each character is feeling and we can connect to that. As we root for them to succeed in there battle against the Empire. The final shot of this scene, is Luke, Leia and the robotic companions of C3-PO and R2-D2 as they watch the Millennium Falcon head off into space. This shot shows that- not all hope is lost and it builds up the last and final film in the trilogy “Return Of The Jedi”.

Looking at one of the scenes that stand out in the film. It is the Battle Of Hoth. This scene is a cinematic spectacle. Considered one of the best scenes in the film, the Battle Of Hoth is between the Rebels defending their base against the evil Empire. The Empire have an edge in the battle due to the awe inspiring AT-ATs that are one of the stand outs of that scene, due to the lost art of practical effects that make the walkers stand out from the rest of the surrounding. With the metal sounds that the Walkers make, to the blast noises that both the Rebel fighters and Walkers make. To also John Williams’s amazing composition, which represents what the whole, Star Wars Franchise is about. A futuristic, stylish movie.

Another scene from the film is the scene of Luke being trained by legendary Jedi master Yoda. In this scene, set in the eerie, creepy planet of Dagobah. This scene moves away from the technology feel that Star Wars usually give to its audience. In this scene we see the older and wiser Yoda demonstrate the spirituality known in the world as “The Force”. The Force separates itself from everything that’s in Star Wars. It divides the technological, advance technology of what makes Star Wars to natural feeling and something that you cant feel and touch, but more it’s a part of you.

So overall, I look at the Empire Strikes Back as an amazing movie. Not only is it a Science Fiction Masterpiece, but also it’s a stepping-stone for future film makers (like myself) to look at this film and see how to direct and make an amazing film. With a great story to give the audience something to be interested in, memorable characters, an amazing score and iconic scenes that can never be duplicated.

Task 2 - The Opening

1:39 - 2:50

Barthes - The enigma that is presented in the film is the mystery of why the Empire is sending a drone down to Hoth. It gives the audience an intrigue to the movie and makes us want to see more of why the drone is in Hoth and what it is after.

Establishing Mood - The mood that Luke Skywalker feels when he is riding his Whomper is of mystery and that he doesn’t know what to expect from the strange smoke that is ascending from the ice. But it gives an impression that something dangerous is yet to come.

Credits/Event Signifiers - The event that occur during the opening scene of Empire Strikes Back. Depicts the Empire as they send drones to the planet of Hoth. This shows us that a big event is yet to come. Not only that, but it makes the audience a lot more intrigued to see what is going to happen, which the movie succeeds in.

Pace - The pace of the opening is shot very well. From seeing the Empire star fleet. To seeing our protagonist Luke Skywalker. It flows really well and is paced fluently is well. Its not too messy, nor is it really awkward. Its edited right.

Narrative Theory

From 1:39:49 - 1:41:32

Character Roles:
The protagonist of the ending of Empire Strikes Back is Luke Skywalker. Who is in a state of shock after it has been revealed that his father is Darth Vader. Not only that but, he is currently undergoing a surgery to his hand after it was decapitated by Vader. We also have the helpers in the ending of the scene. R2-D2 and C3PO who are comforting Luke and Leia. We also have Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca. Two other helpers in the film, who are on there way to find Han Solo. Finally we have our princess. Leia. Who is comforting Luke after the shock he has just received.

What Happens:
In this final scene of Empire Strikes Back. The rebel alliance has headed to there base and there we see Luke has a surgical repair to obtain a new hand after it was decapitated by Darth Vader. Also in this scene, is the charismatic Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca as they are in the Millennium Falcon as they are prepared to rescue Han Solo from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt. As they leave in the iconic vessel. Luke, Leia, C3PO and R2-D2 watch as there friends begin the hunt for there friend.

Puzzles and what is solved:
In the final scene. We have Luke finding out that the person who he though killed his father and his mentor. Is actually his father. That leads the viewers specially to the next movie on the idea of how does the relationship of Luke and Vader be now, since Luke has had this revelation. It also makes us think, will be do anything to his father is well.

Opposites:
The opposites in this scene is the human being in the same scene with droids. This is a complete opposite to humans who have skin, internal organs. To droids who are all machine and are a complete opposite to how a human looks.

Sci-Fi Soundtracks.

The following I am going to be discussing is three Science Fiction film scores and I will be discussing the instruments, tempo, pitch and its durations.

The first science fiction score I will be discussing is the 1980s sci-fi film E.T. The score starts off very slowly and as the song progresses around the 30 to 45second mark. It gradually becomes louder and louder it tones of instruments being used. Like a piano and a violin and as the song becomes in fruition and becomes established, the song begins to fade out with only a little of the piano being played.

The second science fiction film I will be analysing is a classic. Star Wars. The theme of Star Wars starts of with a bang. With an orchestra playing various instruments and the orchestra carries on to play. Adding different instruments and eventually after a few minutes of this classic piece, the song eventually fades out with only what sound likes a keyboard being played and a few instruments fading into the background.

Finally the last movie I will be analysing is 2001: A Space Odyssey. This piece of music will sound familiar as it is the theme song for the legendary Ric Flair. The song starts of what sounds like a keyboard being played and eventually drums would be included and a full course orchestra would be playing and sound would change and carry on but would carry on being loud and when it finished, it instantly finishes. No build up, just full on silence.

Song/Music In Film

Song/Music In Film
Ecstasy Of Gold.

The following song that I am going to be analysing is from the 1966 western classic, the good, the bad and the ugly. I am going to be telling you why I chose the song, the effect on the narrative and on the audience.

Ecstasy of gold is one of the greatest orchestra pieces that were ever created for film. The life it gives into the classic western adds so much positivity and adds life into the film. In fact, the song is played during a cemetery scene which is kind of the opposite of the music you would think would be played in a cemetery.

The effect it has on the narrative is a sense of hope and a sense of joy in the film. The movie is an adventure film, to find the gold. And when you watch the movie. You! The audience are a part of this journey to find the gold along with all these characters.

The effect the song has on the audience is a very adventurous type. It gives life to the movie. It also gives out a sense of hope, not just for the film. But for us as humans for the sound and how adventurous it is. It makes us want to go and find the gold is well and embark on this journey too.

Task 1: Short Explanation...

When music is used in films. It creates an emotion for the viewer, when they are watching the movie. Many of these feelings could be… that the music is mixed with the movement of the characters emotion. Music is also there to create a vibe for the location, the emotion of the characters and also how would the audience feel with the use of music that is played.

Sound Of Sherlock Holmes & The Glossary

Glossary

1. Diegetic - The sound that can be heard during a scene or throughout the entire film.
2. Non-Diegetic - The sound that is not natural part of the scene, but is added to create an emotion for example a music score or a narrator.
3. Ambient - A sound used to create a particular atmosphere or a sense of place.
4. SFX - Short for sound effects.
5. Mood - An emotion that the characters feel, that makes the audience have a similar emotion is well.
6. Tone - Sound that references to the scene.
7. Genre - A style or category of a movie e.g. action, adventure, sci-fi or horror.
8. Theme music - A piece of a music made specifically for the movie.
9. Voiceover - A technique where an individuals voice is being played, it is usually done to add effect or add something to the story.
10. Musical Score - A piece of music that is played doing the duration of the film. Which is used to make a scene more special.
11. Synchronous sound - A sound used to match whats going on to a very specific scene.
12. Asynchronous sound - A piece of music used to give out emotion.
13. Contrapuntal - Two pieces of music that is merged together.
14. Silence - When sound is not heard throughout the scene which adds an emotion to that scene.
15. Selective sound - Sound used for one scene, for the reason so it matches what is going on.
16. Sound bridges - A piece of music that carries on from one scene to another.

After watching the opening clip of Sherlock Holmes. The sounds that are Diegetic are the sounds of guns getting cocked up, ready to load as shown in the clip. Another sound in the opening is the window being broken by Sherlock Holmes (played by Robert Downey Jr) to escape the grasps of what looks like the police. Thirdly another sound is the sound of a what looks like a crow flying and roaring as it is shown for only a few seconds. Finally, the last diegetic was the sounds of the horses hooves and the neighing being heard loudly in the entire scene.

The sound that was Non-Diegetic was when you heard throughout the entire scene a score. It started quietly with what sounded like a piano. Then eventually drums could be heard along with a full course orchestra being heard throughout the entire scene. This makes the scene more dramatic and more intense and grips the audience more and more to find out whats going to happen.

Sound

Sound is very important to a movie. The definition of sound is vibration. It works on vibrating waves. Another important thing about sound is the ton of the sound. Which is a volume which ranges from loud, quite, loud pitch ect.

A very important piece of the movie is the sound. This is called Diegetic Sound. This is sound that is part of the movie. Like the noises being heard in the background, to when the characters speak to one another which is dialogue. The opposite to Diegetic Sound is, Non-Diegetic sound. This is sound that is not coming from the movie but from different types of media like music, soundtrack. Another sound that is in the film is called Ambient. Which is the background sound that is heard in the movie. For example the surroundings in the area or the glorious rain.

Mikes Work - 29/09/14

On the 29th of September 2014. Me and a group of friends where filming 10 second shots of the following subjects. Which was the "Environment". The idea was too capture the subject, but to also pan out in a very gentle and very fluent way and not make it look like a shaky £0 budget movie.

The first shot I took was by the Digbeth Custard Factory. It was the curve tunnel that a lot of individuals would go pass on a day to day basis. My idea was too start filming from there, then after 10 seconds I would pan out and I would make the shot more wider and thus showing the bridge. The whole filming process was very enjoyable however, my only gripe was that when I was filming a lot of habitants would pass by and though it wasn't there fault (being I was in there way) the shot could have finished ages ago.

The next shot I was going to take was of a weirdly designed yet a very unique, colourful graffiti piece. After those 10 seconds I would pan to show the three lads who where in my group, posing by the wall. Where next I would move the camera to the left to show the rest of the environment. Out of the filming that I did on the day. This was easily the easiest too do. It was simple, there was hardly anyone around and It was done just like that.

After doing "Environment" pieces we would then move on too show people working, in the different environments. I did mine last after everyone in the group. The idea was too show my three classmates, one of them looking at a mirror, while the other two had a piece of paper and where looking at it. Which had something to do with directions. This piece was easily my weakest because even though I had the panning right, I felt I could have done something a lot more original and a lot to do with the subject. Another gripe, was the fact that a few inhabitants got into the film which was all my fault cause I couldn't stop the video in time. But overall that day was a very educational and understandable day. On how to film and what to do and make it work and what doesn't work and what not to do when your filming. So that day in my mind was very helpful.

Analysing Horror Movies Mise-en-scene

The Thing: Mise-en-scene

Today I will be analysing a horror movie of my choosing and using the “Mise-en-scene” that my teacher gave me. The movie I will be analysing is John Carpenter’s The Thing, which is a remake of a 1950s classic “A Thing From Outer Space”.

The first thing I want to analyse is the setting. The setting that the movie is set in is Antarctica. The most loneliness place in all of the world. Its a very morbid, grey, featureless scenery which is perfect for a horror movie of this calibre. There is isolation and a sense of loneliness from the western civilisation that us as humans live in. The props are of course not really something from your typical horror movie. These characters are all wearing arctic attire, that is typically worn by people who are living in very cold areas and especially in Antarctica, one of the world’s coldest areas.

The hair/make up is not seen throughout the trailer. It’s usually seen when the characters are in their warm bases, where their hair is neat and having different styles. Their makeup is used to show the characters looking very cold and showing them looking very tired through what they have to go through. As for the facial expressions shown in the trailers. They range from different expressions. From the shock of what they have discovered, to the horror of what is yet to come, to some of the characters taking matters in there own hands to prevent the alien from escaping the cabinet and into our world.

The lighting and colour that is shown is a mixture of different colours. You first have light colours when the characters are shown outside in the Antarctica lands, which contrasts with the darkness when the characters are in there base and even when they go into the night in the scene shot in the trailer. It shows just like the characters, that colour is changing throughout and it represents what the movie is about. The change of characters that is present throughout the movie.

The first shot is of 3 of the characters looking at what is below them, which is where the thing is hiding. The lighting of this shot is quite bright and the characters are dressed up warmly. This shot shows mystery and we don’t know what is going to happen with these characters and what they’ll find. But we know what they will discover down under.
The second shot is of the main character talking to the remaining members. This shot has a mixture of different colours. From brightness that is shining on the main character, to the darkness in the background. The character is dressed up warmly being in the Antarctica landscape. This scene shows that its very dramatic and the main character and his crew are going to make a final stand.

The final shot is of one of the characters meeting his end as his facial expression says it all. The lighting is primarily dark with a tint of light coming from the white snow floor and his bloody hands. But mainly darkness. The character is dressed up in a winter attire, and his facial expression shows he is meeting his end. Thanks to the Thing.

Will The Scots Get Freedom?

Today is a very important day for Scotland. It marks the time when the votes for whether Scotland will be an Independent country, or If it will remain with the United Kingdom are finally counted. The following Is my opinion on whether or not the Scots will get their independence from the Union. I got some ideas from watching two videos on Scotland getting their rights.

The first video I saw was by "Yes Scotland" a campaign that supports Scotland becoming an independent country. The video gave many facts about why Scotland should become an independent country. From saying ideas like their own parliament, keeping university tuition fees free, protecting the NHS just to name a few. These facts give the people of Scotland the chance to think we want all these things and we don't need London for it then. They also talk about If we stay with the United Kingdom, we wont be given any of these things and the chances of us being our own country is very "slim". The video also had an arrange of different images and colours. The images both contrasted well with one another. In the colour section, you had what would it be if Scotland became independent and showing the happiness of the people that are living in the country. While the black and white, depressing side of the video showed what would it be if Scotland stayed with the Union. Showing a child upset with images of London and many of the head people like David Cameron.

The second video I saw was by "Better Together" a Pro-Independence group. Created to support the independence of Scotland. Like "Yes Scotland" they have many facts to support why Scotland should become its own independent country. From having our own economy, more jobs, life would be easier for the people of Scotland, If they get independence. Looking at these facts they seem to intrigue a lot of people and give the Scots a sense of hope. With the video giving a lot of information, It was a very bland and a not so attractive video. Colours were gritty and not so pretty. While the images were not very attractive the eye of the viewers.

However with positives, there are a lot of negatives. I could say we would need a new Doctor (Who) as Peter Capaldi is Scottish. But... on a serious note. I feel If Scotland gets their independence. They won't be getting support anymore from West Minister. They would be in there own problems and they will have no one to help them but themselves. As a famous quote says "You make the bed you lie it". So as much as I like to support Scotland and I do. Any country that wants to be free and be independent it gets a hugh amount of respect from me. However I feel once they get their independence, whats next? Do they rely on England? Do they face a economical crisis? Queens Of The Stone Age said it best "No One Knows". So Im going to leave off by putting a song that represents what the Scottish people are going through. Good luck Scots.

Oasis Reuniting?

The day Oasis coming back together will be an amazing sight for the British music scene. However It will probably wont happen in another few years. Both (Noel and Liam) Gallagher brothers are doing there own projects and are doing pretty well by themselves. Plus I believe If they reunite as much as a fan I am. I believe it will the mystique that made them that band. That band that put Britain back as one of the best britons band of all time. So while now its not the "masterplan" for the band to get back together. But I wont doubt that they'll be back in another 2-3 years. - HU
