Analysing Horror Movies Mise-en-scene

The Thing: Mise-en-scene

Today I will be analysing a horror movie of my choosing and using the “Mise-en-scene” that my teacher gave me. The movie I will be analysing is John Carpenter’s The Thing, which is a remake of a 1950s classic “A Thing From Outer Space”.

The first thing I want to analyse is the setting. The setting that the movie is set in is Antarctica. The most loneliness place in all of the world. Its a very morbid, grey, featureless scenery which is perfect for a horror movie of this calibre. There is isolation and a sense of loneliness from the western civilisation that us as humans live in. The props are of course not really something from your typical horror movie. These characters are all wearing arctic attire, that is typically worn by people who are living in very cold areas and especially in Antarctica, one of the world’s coldest areas.

The hair/make up is not seen throughout the trailer. It’s usually seen when the characters are in their warm bases, where their hair is neat and having different styles. Their makeup is used to show the characters looking very cold and showing them looking very tired through what they have to go through. As for the facial expressions shown in the trailers. They range from different expressions. From the shock of what they have discovered, to the horror of what is yet to come, to some of the characters taking matters in there own hands to prevent the alien from escaping the cabinet and into our world.

The lighting and colour that is shown is a mixture of different colours. You first have light colours when the characters are shown outside in the Antarctica lands, which contrasts with the darkness when the characters are in there base and even when they go into the night in the scene shot in the trailer. It shows just like the characters, that colour is changing throughout and it represents what the movie is about. The change of characters that is present throughout the movie.

The first shot is of 3 of the characters looking at what is below them, which is where the thing is hiding. The lighting of this shot is quite bright and the characters are dressed up warmly. This shot shows mystery and we don’t know what is going to happen with these characters and what they’ll find. But we know what they will discover down under.
The second shot is of the main character talking to the remaining members. This shot has a mixture of different colours. From brightness that is shining on the main character, to the darkness in the background. The character is dressed up warmly being in the Antarctica landscape. This scene shows that its very dramatic and the main character and his crew are going to make a final stand.

The final shot is of one of the characters meeting his end as his facial expression says it all. The lighting is primarily dark with a tint of light coming from the white snow floor and his bloody hands. But mainly darkness. The character is dressed up in a winter attire, and his facial expression shows he is meeting his end. Thanks to the Thing.

Will The Scots Get Freedom?

Today is a very important day for Scotland. It marks the time when the votes for whether Scotland will be an Independent country, or If it will remain with the United Kingdom are finally counted. The following Is my opinion on whether or not the Scots will get their independence from the Union. I got some ideas from watching two videos on Scotland getting their rights.

The first video I saw was by "Yes Scotland" a campaign that supports Scotland becoming an independent country. The video gave many facts about why Scotland should become an independent country. From saying ideas like their own parliament, keeping university tuition fees free, protecting the NHS just to name a few. These facts give the people of Scotland the chance to think we want all these things and we don't need London for it then. They also talk about If we stay with the United Kingdom, we wont be given any of these things and the chances of us being our own country is very "slim". The video also had an arrange of different images and colours. The images both contrasted well with one another. In the colour section, you had what would it be if Scotland became independent and showing the happiness of the people that are living in the country. While the black and white, depressing side of the video showed what would it be if Scotland stayed with the Union. Showing a child upset with images of London and many of the head people like David Cameron.

The second video I saw was by "Better Together" a Pro-Independence group. Created to support the independence of Scotland. Like "Yes Scotland" they have many facts to support why Scotland should become its own independent country. From having our own economy, more jobs, life would be easier for the people of Scotland, If they get independence. Looking at these facts they seem to intrigue a lot of people and give the Scots a sense of hope. With the video giving a lot of information, It was a very bland and a not so attractive video. Colours were gritty and not so pretty. While the images were not very attractive the eye of the viewers.

However with positives, there are a lot of negatives. I could say we would need a new Doctor (Who) as Peter Capaldi is Scottish. But... on a serious note. I feel If Scotland gets their independence. They won't be getting support anymore from West Minister. They would be in there own problems and they will have no one to help them but themselves. As a famous quote says "You make the bed you lie it". So as much as I like to support Scotland and I do. Any country that wants to be free and be independent it gets a hugh amount of respect from me. However I feel once they get their independence, whats next? Do they rely on England? Do they face a economical crisis? Queens Of The Stone Age said it best "No One Knows". So Im going to leave off by putting a song that represents what the Scottish people are going through. Good luck Scots.

Oasis Reuniting?

The day Oasis coming back together will be an amazing sight for the British music scene. However It will probably wont happen in another few years. Both (Noel and Liam) Gallagher brothers are doing there own projects and are doing pretty well by themselves. Plus I believe If they reunite as much as a fan I am. I believe it will the mystique that made them that band. That band that put Britain back as one of the best britons band of all time. So while now its not the "masterplan" for the band to get back together. But I wont doubt that they'll be back in another 2-3 years. - HU
