Barthes - The enigma that is presented in the film is the mystery of why the Empire is sending a drone down to Hoth. It gives the audience an intrigue to the movie and makes us want to see more of why the drone is in Hoth and what it is after.
Establishing Mood - The mood that Luke Skywalker feels when he is riding his Whomper is of mystery and that he doesn’t know what to expect from the strange smoke that is ascending from the ice. But it gives an impression that something dangerous is yet to come.
Credits/Event Signifiers - The event that occur during the opening scene of Empire Strikes Back. Depicts the Empire as they send drones to the planet of Hoth. This shows us that a big event is yet to come. Not only that, but it makes the audience a lot more intrigued to see what is going to happen, which the movie succeeds in.
Pace - The pace of the opening is shot very well. From seeing the Empire star fleet. To seeing our protagonist Luke Skywalker. It flows really well and is paced fluently is well. Its not too messy, nor is it really awkward. Its edited right.
