The Lumiere Legacy

1 - The lumiere Brothers (Louis and Auguste) were two french brothers, who would revolutionise the early films in the late 19th century to early 20th century.
2 - Both the brothers lived in Besoncon, France.
3 - At that time, the person who ruled France was Napoleon the 3rd.
4 - Another significant events that occurred during the Lumiere brothers period was the Civil War between the North and South of America.
5 - The films that the Lumiere brothers created, show a lot of what the daily working class Joe does in there daily lives.
6 - The films were not too long. They where approximately 5 minutes. Reason for this was because the filming at the time wasn’t too advance and obviously different to how films are filmed today.
7 - The cinematography was of course was very standard for the time and in terms of positioning, it wasn’t too experimental like many films of today and was just given a very simple treatment of the camera being still and just letting it film the scenery.

Hello. My name is Hassan Ul-Haq. Today I will be discussing a film that I adore so much that, I consider it to be on my top 5 favourite films of all time. That film being Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. This sequel from the highly successful “The New Hope” was released in 1980. It was directed by the talented George Lucas who not only is known for the Star Wars Franchise. But movies such as Indiana Jones, THX 1138 and American Graffiti. To name a few from Lucas’s résumé. It stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford (who at the time, was still filming for the popular adventure series “Indiana Jones”), Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew and Frank Oz. Thoughts were varied when it was first released with mixed reviews. But as time went on, the film was considered one of the greatest films of all time.

The movie is set 3 years after the events of A New Hope. The rebels now reside in the icy planet of Hoth. But there peace is ruined when the Empire is set to attack our protagonist. As the rebels flee Hoth. The heroic Luke Skywalker goes on a trip to find Yoda to train him, in the ways of the force. While Han Solo, Princess Leia and company are on the run from the Empire. But when Luke senses his friends are in trouble. He must make a choice: Stay and master the will of the force. Or… leave and save his friends. But a secret will be revealed to Luke that changes the face of the Star Wars universe and the rest of cinema history.

As the film begins we have the typical Star Wars scroll up that we have seen in the first film and in many more to come. The film starts with an Empire Fleet roaming the planet of Hoth. Sending down small, but very futuristic- Drones to the icy planet. From the get go, we know that something big is going to occur in this sequel. The drones make a very electronic sound, representing that futuristic feeling that the Star Wars universe is all about. Moving from that moment, we go from one of the drones that landed in Hoth to the camera moving on to our protagonist Luke Skywalker. Which shows that a lot is going on in Hoth and building up the conflict between the Rebels and the Empire on Hoth. When we see Luke on Hoth we instantly recognise our protagonist since we last saw him in A New Hope. Wearing attire that represented the planet they’re currently occupying in which is warm, comfy attire from head to toe. With a distinguishing hat and unique binoculars. Luke is also shown to be riding a Tauntaun. A fictional horse like creature that Luke rides in the Icy horizon. Shows the wider universe that these characters in Star Wars inhabit and shows something more organic rather then man made. Like when it roars, it gives out the opposite sound to what the drone gave which was an electronic sound. Instead the Tauntaun made a roar similar to of an animal like a horse. Majestically and beautifully.

In the final scene of Empire Strikes Back. After escaping Cloud City from the clutches of the Empire. Our protagonists re-group together as not only have they lost Han Solo who is currently in stasis. But, Luke discovering that Darth Vader is his father. However in this scene our heroes are not quitting so easily. The shot moves from the Rebel base to the very As the ewe inspiring Chewbacca and the charismatic Lando Calrissian are set to find Han Solo and return him back to the Rebel base. The editing in this scene skips too each hero. Showing each of there emotions and showing what each character is feeling and we can connect to that. As we root for them to succeed in there battle against the Empire. The final shot of this scene, is Luke, Leia and the robotic companions of C3-PO and R2-D2 as they watch the Millennium Falcon head off into space. This shot shows that- not all hope is lost and it builds up the last and final film in the trilogy “Return Of The Jedi”.

Looking at one of the scenes that stand out in the film. It is the Battle Of Hoth. This scene is a cinematic spectacle. Considered one of the best scenes in the film, the Battle Of Hoth is between the Rebels defending their base against the evil Empire. The Empire have an edge in the battle due to the awe inspiring AT-ATs that are one of the stand outs of that scene, due to the lost art of practical effects that make the walkers stand out from the rest of the surrounding. With the metal sounds that the Walkers make, to the blast noises that both the Rebel fighters and Walkers make. To also John Williams’s amazing composition, which represents what the whole, Star Wars Franchise is about. A futuristic, stylish movie.

Another scene from the film is the scene of Luke being trained by legendary Jedi master Yoda. In this scene, set in the eerie, creepy planet of Dagobah. This scene moves away from the technology feel that Star Wars usually give to its audience. In this scene we see the older and wiser Yoda demonstrate the spirituality known in the world as “The Force”. The Force separates itself from everything that’s in Star Wars. It divides the technological, advance technology of what makes Star Wars to natural feeling and something that you cant feel and touch, but more it’s a part of you.

So overall, I look at the Empire Strikes Back as an amazing movie. Not only is it a Science Fiction Masterpiece, but also it’s a stepping-stone for future film makers (like myself) to look at this film and see how to direct and make an amazing film. With a great story to give the audience something to be interested in, memorable characters, an amazing score and iconic scenes that can never be duplicated.

Task 2 - The Opening

Barthes - The enigma that is presented in the film is the mystery of why the Empire is sending a drone down to Hoth. It gives the audience an intrigue to the movie and makes us want to see more of why the drone is in Hoth and what it is after.

Establishing Mood - The mood that Luke Skywalker feels when he is riding his Whomper is of mystery and that he doesn’t know what to expect from the strange smoke that is ascending from the ice. But it gives an impression that something dangerous is yet to come.

Credits/Event Signifiers - The event that occur during the opening scene of Empire Strikes Back. Depicts the Empire as they send drones to the planet of Hoth. This shows us that a big event is yet to come. Not only that, but it makes the audience a lot more intrigued to see what is going to happen, which the movie succeeds in.

Pace - The pace of the opening is shot very well. From seeing the Empire star fleet. To seeing our protagonist Luke Skywalker. It flows really well and is paced fluently is well. Its not too messy, nor is it really awkward. Its edited right.

Character Roles:
The protagonist of the ending of Empire Strikes Back is Luke Skywalker. Who is in a state of shock after it has been revealed that his father is Darth Vader. Not only that but, he is currently undergoing a surgery to his hand after it was decapitated by Vader. We also have the helpers in the ending of the scene. R2-D2 and C3PO who are comforting Luke and Leia. We also have Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca. Two other helpers in the film, who are on there way to find Han Solo. Finally we have our princess. Leia. Who is comforting Luke after the shock he has just received.


What Happens:
In this final scene of Empire Strikes Back. The rebel alliance has headed to there base and there we see Luke has a surgical repair to obtain a new hand after it was decapitated by Darth Vader. Also in this scene, is the charismatic Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca as they are in the Millennium Falcon as they are prepared to rescue Han Solo from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt. As they leave in the iconic vessel. Luke, Leia, C3PO and R2-D2 watch as there friends begin the hunt for there friend.


Puzzles and what is solved:
In the final scene. We have Luke finding out that the person who he though killed his father and his mentor. Is actually his father. That leads the viewers specially to the next movie on the idea of how does the relationship of Luke and Vader be now, since Luke has had this revelation. It also makes us think, will be do anything to his father is well.


Opposites:
The opposites in this scene is the human being in the same scene with droids. This is a complete opposite to humans who have skin, internal organs. To droids who are all machine and are a complete opposite to how a human looks.
